Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II completed Kankaria Lake in 1451 CE, making it one of the oldest man-made water bodies in western India. The lake sits in Maninagar, south-east Ahmedabad, covering 76 acres in a distinctive 34-sided polygon shape with a shoreline of approximately 2 km.

Today, Kankaria Lake functions as the city's largest family recreation zone. The lakefront holds 10+ distinct attractions — Kamla Nehru Zoo, Nagina Wadi island garden, Atal Express toy train, Kids City, a tethered balloon ride, boating, an evening laser show, food stalls, and Jaldhara Water Park directly adjacent to Gate No. 5. Over 20 lakh people visit annually.

History of Kankaria Lake

Construction of Kankaria Lake began under Sultan Muizz-ud-Din Muhammad Shah II in the early 15th century. An inscription at the site records that the lake reached completion during the reign of Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II in 1451 CE. Its original name — Hauj-e-Qutb (Pond of Qutb) — reflected the sultan who oversaw its final phase.

The name "Kankaria" likely derives from kankar, the Gujarati word for limestone. Workers extracted large quantities of it during excavation, and the term stuck among locals.

During the Gujarat Sultanate and Mughal eras, the lake served as a royal bathing and leisure site. Flights of cut stone steps descend to the water on all sides. Six sloped access points, each covered by square cupolas raised on 12 pillars, provided entry for royalty and nobility. The central island — Nagina Wadi — functioned as the sultan's pleasure pavilion.

The British declared Kankaria Lake a protected monument in 1928. In 2008, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) completed a major ₹36 crore renovation that added modern amenities, a promenade, food zones, and family attractions while preserving the heritage stonework.

Kankaria Lake Timings

Kankaria Lake opens at 9:00 AM and closes at 10:00 PM, Tuesday through Sunday. The lake closes every Monday for maintenance.

Morning walkers enjoy a free-entry window from 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM on open days. No ticket is required during this slot — the promenade and walking paths remain accessible for joggers, yoga groups, and early-morning visitors.

The laser show at Nagina Wadi runs from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM every evening. The show projects Gujarat's history and cultural motifs onto a water screen — a must-see for first-time visitors.

Best time to visit: Evenings between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM offer the fullest experience. The most comfortable season runs November through February when temperatures drop to 12–22 °C.

Kankaria Lake Entry Fee

The standard lakefront entry costs ₹25 per adult and ₹10 per child. Senior citizens and children under 3 years enter free. Individual attractions carry separate ticket prices.

Morning walk between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM requires no ticket. No online booking system exists — all tickets are purchased at the gate.

Kankaria Lake Activities and Attractions

Kankaria Lake packs 10+ family attractions along its 2 km shoreline. Each zone caters to a different age group and interest — wildlife, adventure, education, water sports, and dining.

Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden (Kankaria Zoo)

Rueben David established Kankaria Zoo in 1951 on the lake's outer periphery. The zoo spreads across 21 acres and houses lions, tigers, leopards, deer, birds, and reptiles in natural-habitat enclosures. Four specialised sections sit within: aquarium, reptile house, nocturnal house, and Butterfly Park.

Nagina Wadi (Island Garden)

Nagina Wadi occupies a natural island at the exact centre of Kankaria Lake. Its original name — Bagh-e-Nagina ("beautiful garden" in Urdu) — dates to the Sultanate period. A causeway, originally built with 48 stone arches, connects the island to the lakeshore. The island hosts a musical fountain, the 7:00 PM laser show, and boating (₹20 per person) with speedboat and pedal boat options.

Atal Express Toy Train

The Atal Express — named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee — loops around Kankaria Lake on a 2.3 km narrow-gauge track. Imported from London (Severn Lamb), the train travels at 10 km/h and carries up to 150 passengers per trip. Ride duration: 25 minutes. Ticket: ₹30 adult, ₹12 child.

Kids City

Kids City spans 4,240 square metres and recreates a miniature urban environment for children aged 5 to 14 years. Children operate micro-versions of real-world institutions: a fire station, post office, police station, court room and ice-cream factory. Each zone runs 15–20 minute guided sessions. Ticket: ₹100 per child, ₹50 per adult.

Balvatika (Children's Park)

Balvatika sits adjacent to Kamla Nehru Zoo. Redeveloped in 2025 with a ₹22 crore investment, it now features 28 attractions including a Snow Park, Gujarat's first Wax Museum, India's first transparent Glass Tower, Flying Theater, Dinosaur Park and Illusion House. Entry ₹50, with 6 free activities included.

Butterfly Park

The Butterfly Park is an 8,000 sq. metre open-air garden at One Tree Hill near Gate #1. It houses ~50 butterfly species attracted by 150 cultivated host and nectar plants, plus an Education & Interpretation Centre. Entry ₹10 adult, ₹5 child.

Balloon Ride (Ahmedabad Eye)

A tethered helium balloon — branded "Ahmedabad Eye" — lifts visitors 350 feet above Kankaria Lake for a panoramic aerial view of the lakefront and Ahmedabad's skyline. Each ride lasts 10–15 minutes. Ticket: ₹300 per person. Weather-dependent.

Amusement Park and Game Zone

The lakefront amusement park has two zones — Amrapali Funland (₹500 all-inclusive package with 12+ rides plus water park, including a 185-metre Boomerang Roller Coaster) and Adventure World (free entry, 22 pay-per-ride attractions from ₹40). The adjacent game zone features arcade machines, VR experiences and skill-based carnival games.

Aquarium

The Kankaria Aquarium (Machali Ghar) is a two-storey fish house near Gate 1 displaying freshwater and ornamental species including goldfish, cichlids, gouramis, freshwater sharks, catfish and turtles. Entry ₹5 adult, ₹3 child — the most affordable attraction at the lakefront.

Boating and Water Sports

Boating operates from the Nagina Wadi jetty. Options include pedal boats (₹20/20 min), speed boats (₹130), pontoon boats (₹130, groups of 6–10) and jet skis (₹250). Life jackets are mandatory and provided at the jetty.

Kankaria Lake and Jaldhara Water Park — Full-Day Family Plan

Kankaria Lake's southern boundary connects directly to Jaldhara Water Park through Gate No. 5. This makes it possible to combine both destinations into a single day without any transit.

Recommended itinerary

Morning (9 AM – 12 PM): Enter Kankaria Lake. Start with the Atal Express toy train for orientation. Visit Kamla Nehru Zoo, Butterfly Park and Kids City. Take the balloon ride before the midday heat.

Afternoon (12 PM – 5 PM): Walk through Gate No. 5 to Jaldhara Water Park. Spend the hottest hours on the wave pool, rain dance arena and water slides. Cool off, then visit the bowling alley and VR gaming zone.

Evening (5 PM – 9 PM): Return to the Kankaria lakefront. Walk the illuminated promenade. Watch the laser show at Nagina Wadi (7 PM). Eat at the lakefront food stalls — try masala sandwich, dabeli, Gujarati kulfi and gola.

Jaldhara Water Park also hosts birthday parties, school picnics and weddings at its poolside banquet hall — worth noting for group planners.

• By Metro: Ahmedabad Metro Line 1 has stations within 3 km. Auto-rickshaws and shared autos connect metro stations to the lakefront.
• By Bus: AMTS routes 128, 32, 72, 124, 151 and 152 pass the Kankaria area. Nearest bus stop — Punit Ashram (3-minute walk).
• By Auto/Cab: Ola and Uber operate throughout Ahmedabad. Auto-rickshaws use fare meters with a ₹20 minimum.
• By Car: On-site parking is available at multiple gates. Gate No. 5 has dedicated parking.

Kankaria Carnival — Annual December Festival

The Kankaria Carnival runs for 7 days in the last week of December every year. It ranks among Gujarat's largest open-air cultural festivals. The event programme includes magic shows, laser shows, rock band performances, dance competitions, art exhibitions, heritage walks and a dedicated food court with over 100 stalls.

Daily attendance during the carnival exceeds 1 lakh visitors on peak days. Most events are free with standard lake entry (₹25). Special performances may carry separate ticketing.
